Old Testament in a Year

Village Church Family,

We are kicking off the year with a church wide opportunity to read through the Old Testament online using the YouVersion Bible app and The Bible Project devotions. In 2027, we’ll get back to the New Testament. My guess is that many of us have not read through the Old Testament and it can be complicated. When you think about how much of the New Testament references the Old Testament with allusions and direct quotes, it is critical for us to grow in our knowledge of this part of the Bible so we can grow in our walk with Christ. That is why I hope everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to read and learn from the full witness of scripture with the community of faith. If you don’t have an account, the first step is to create an account with the YouVersion Bible app by clicking on the following link, https://my.bible.com/. You’ll want to make sure you turn off the notifications in the settings or you’ll probably get a lot of emails when people comment in the app.

If you already have an account, click the invite button below and then the accept invitation button.

Directions for Reading through the Old Testament in a Year:

Before you read the Bible, take a moment to offer up a simple prayer. The reason scripture speaks to us is through the power of the Holy Spirit, so it’s important to start this way. One suggestion is the following: “Lord, open my heart and mind to your words today through the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus Name, Amen.” Another suggestion is “Gracious God, please still my heart and mind so I can hear your Word for me. In Jesus name, Amen.”

We begin January 1st with Genesis 1. Bible Project videos are embedded in the devotion to give context. For the first two dats, please watch the videos, as they clarify the reading and tie themes together. This approach should help you navigate the Old Testament and support your walk with Jesus.

Each day, answer the same simple question. You may feel nervous at first, but it gets easier. Your response can be brief so please write something each day you read. Some days, answers will come easily; other days, they may be short. I’ll facilitate and occasionally post longer responses.

My final suggestion is a little controversial but I think is one of the more helpful things to do. If you miss a day (kids are sick, you forgot, need a pause, a crisis, etc…) just skip ahead to the current day in the study. Most give up because they fall behind. God understands your busy life so don’t worry, move on. The key is to get back into it and over time, the arch of the scriptures.

At the end of 2026, your faithfulness to this discipline will help you grow as a disciple, and I’m delighted you’re joining the journey. I’m so glad you signed up and I hope you will grow in your love of the Word.

Joyfully,

Pastor Spencer
