Cross-Examined Witnesses

Scripture: Luke 23:32–49 | Date: July 27, 2025

We all respond to the cross in different ways. In Luke’s account, three powerful scenes show how people witnessed Jesus' death—and how we still do.

First, the religious leaders, soldiers, and a criminal mocked Jesus. They called Him “King of the Jews” without realizing they were telling the truth.

Jesus didn’t strike back. Instead, He said, “Father, forgive them.” His response shows grace, even while being mocked and tortured.

Second, the penitent thief saw something others missed. He knew Jesus was innocent. He believed Jesus had a kingdom beyond death.

Jesus promised him, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” The cross didn’t look like power—but it was.

Third, a Roman centurion praised God after watching Jesus die. He saw the darkness. He heard Jesus’ words. He saw His peace.

Even from the foot of the cross, that soldier recognized truth. “Surely this man was innocent,” he said.

Luke shows us how different people responded to Jesus. Now, we are invited to respond too.

We weren’t eyewitnesses. But we’ve heard the story. And now we’re called to be ear-witnesses—those who hear and testify.

The cross still examines hearts today. It reveals what we believe and how we live.

So how will you respond? With mocking? With silence? Or with faith and praise?

God’s Spirit empowers us to be bold, faithful witnesses. Not in our own strength—but by grace.

We are not just observers. We are part of the story. We are cross-examined witnesses.
