Being a Light

Scripture: Isaiah 49:5-7 & Matthew 5:14-16 | Date: September 21, 2025

Darkness comes in many forms. It may appear as uncertainty, grief, division, or even hopelessness. In such moments, God calls us to light.

Isaiah 49 reminds us that God’s servant is sent as a light to the nations. This mission is too great for one people alone. God’s light is expansive: it reaches outsiders, strangers, and all nations. His salvation extends to the ends of the earth.

This promise is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the true light of the world. His life, death, and resurrection brought hope into darkness. He healed the sick, forgave sins, and welcomed outsiders. Through Him, the light shines, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

But Jesus didn't stop there. In Matthew 5, He turns to His disciples and says, “You are the light of the world.” We are not passive observers. We are called to shine God’s light in our homes, workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods.

Being a light in the world often looks ordinary. It may mean offering forgiveness, extending compassion, or standing up for someone overlooked. It could also be showing kindness during conflict, praying with family, or listening with full attention. These small acts create ripples of hope.

The world does not need one person shining alone. It needs a community of light bearers. Together, we reflect Jesus to a world struggling with fear and division.

Jesus has entrusted us with His light. He sends us into darkness with hope, courage, and love. Darkness does not get the final word. Christ does.

So live as light. Shine boldly, not for your own glory, but to point others to the true Light of the world—Jesus Christ.
