Experience God's Presence | The Personal Presence of God

Have you ever felt completely alone?

Maybe you've faced a major decision and didn't know which way to go. Perhaps you're grieving someone you love, facing an uncertain medical test, adjusting to an empty nest, or simply wondering what comes next.

Sometimes we can even feel alone when we're surrounded by people.

These experiences are part of being human. But Jesus gives His followers a remarkable promise: we are never truly alone.

The Holy Spirit is the personal presence of God in our lives. He comes alongside us, remains with us, guides us, and gives us peace.

Once we begin to understand and live into this reality, it can change the way we experience everyday life.

Jesus Promised We Would Not Be Alone

The disciples understood what it felt like to be abandoned.

At the Last Supper, Jesus told them He was leaving. They didn't fully understand what was about to happen, but they knew something was changing. Their teacher, leader, and friend would no longer be physically beside them. They were sad, frightened, and confused.

It was into that uncertainty that Jesus promised the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus called the Holy Spirit “another advocate”—one who is called to come alongside us. The Spirit would continue the work of Christ and remain with His followers after Jesus' physical departure.

This is the good news: God does not leave His people to navigate life alone.

The Holy Spirit Is the Personal Presence of God

The Holy Spirit can sometimes feel like the most overlooked or misunderstood person of the Trinity.

But Jesus does not describe the Spirit as an impersonal force or distant power. The Holy Spirit is personal.

Jesus refers to the Spirit as “he,” not “it.” The Spirit is the One who comes alongside us and deepens our relationship with God.

The Spirit's presence means that God's presence is not limited to a church building, a worship service, or a particular spiritual experience.

God is with you wherever you are. That changes how we understand everyday life.

Three Ways the Holy Spirit Is Present in Your Life

Jesus' words in John 14 point to three ways the Holy Spirit makes God's presence personal and real: the Spirit abides with us, guides us, and gives us peace.

1. The Holy Spirit Abides With You

Jesus says the Spirit “will be in you.”

This isn't a temporary arrangement. Jesus was physically present with His disciples for three years. But the Holy Spirit remains with believers for life and eternity.

That means you are never outside God's presence.

Brother Lawrence, a seventeenth-century monk, described this as making our hearts a chapel where we can turn toward God throughout the day.

You don't have to be inside a church to be with God. You can pray while driving or while doing the dishes. While working, walking, waiting, or resting you can turn toward Him.

Wherever you are, the Holy Spirit is with you.

2. The Holy Spirit Guides You

Feeling lost isn't limited to getting lost physically.

Life can leave us wondering: What should I do? Where should I go? What does God want from me? Am I making the right decision?

Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth. He teaches us, reminds us of Jesus' words, and guides us in the way of Christ.

Sometimes the Spirit may guide us through a quiet prompting.

But the sermon emphasizes that the Spirit often guides us through Scripture. A verse may suddenly speak directly to something we're facing. A biblical theme may keep appearing throughout our week. These can become ways the Spirit draws our attention back to God's truth.

The Holy Spirit helps us recognize when we've wandered from God's ways and points us back toward Jesus.

3. The Holy Spirit Gives You Peace

Jesus also says: “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you.”

Jesus doesn't promise His disciples a life without difficulty. They would face opposition, suffering, and persecution.

But they would not face those things alone. The Holy Spirit would remind them of God's presence and give them a peace that circumstances could not take away.

The same is true for us.

People experience God's peace in the midst of illness, grief, loneliness, tragedy, and uncertainty. Hardship doesn't always disappear, but the Holy Spirit can draw us closer to God in the middle of it.

God's presence doesn't always change our circumstances. But His presence changes how we experience them.

Why Don't We Always Experience God's Presence?

If the Holy Spirit is God's personal presence with us, why don't we always feel close to God?

The sermon points to two important realities.

Receive Christ and the Holy Spirit

Jesus teaches that we must be born again—not merely Christian in name, but people who genuinely trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Ephesians 1:13–14 describes believers as being sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when they believe the gospel.

The invitation is simple and profound: Put your trust in Christ and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit is for you.

Walk in Step With the Spirit

For those who already follow Jesus, experiencing the Spirit's presence also involves learning to walk in step with Him.

The Spirit does not simply take control of our lives and change everything overnight.

We are called to choose daily to live in step with the Spirit rather than according to the patterns of the world.

That can become an ongoing conversation throughout the day:

Is what I'm doing consistent with the way of Jesus?

Are my thoughts shaped by Christ?

Are my feelings leading me somewhere God wants me to go?

Am I becoming more like Jesus?

This ongoing attentiveness to the Spirit can become deeply transformational.

Practice the Presence of God

One spiritual discipline can help us become more aware of God's presence: practicing the presence of God.

Brother Lawrence became known for consciously living in God's presence during ordinary activities.

He didn't divide life into “spiritual” moments and “ordinary” moments.

Prayer wasn't limited to kneeling in church. He experienced communion with God while working in a busy kitchen, surrounded by noise and interruptions.

That's an invitation for all of us.

You don't have to wait for a powerful worship service or a quiet retreat to connect with God.

Practice His presence in the ordinary moments of your day.

When you wake up, acknowledge His presence.

When you're driving, talk with Him.

If you're facing a difficult conversation, ask for His guidance.

When anxiety rises, remember that you are not alone.

When something good happens, thank Him.

If you don't know what to do, ask the Spirit to guide you.

You Are Not Alone

We may not always know where we're going or understand what God is doing. We may face seasons of grief, uncertainty, illness, loneliness, or fear.

But followers of Jesus never face those moments alone. The Holy Spirit is the personal presence of God in your life.

He comes alongside you. He abides with you and guides you. The Holy Spirit gives you peace.

And He draws you closer and closer to the heart of God.

So don't simply believe that God is present. Practice His presence.

Turn toward Him throughout your day. Listen for His guidance through Scripture. Invite Him into your decisions, thoughts, feelings, work, relationships, and ordinary routines.

You are not alone.

God is with you through the Spirit—every time, every place, and every circumstance.
